AAPC ShowMe Chapter Meeting Minutes

 

Show-Me Chapter Meeting Minutes May 10, 2007

Gere Harmon brought the meeting to order. 

Lisa Crowley introduced the speaker, Dr. Tom Aleto from Orthopaedics to speak about THA & TKA. 

Coding scenarios were provided & reviewed by Bev Shelly. 

Donna Epperly read the minutes & treasurer’s report from the April meeting; both were approved.  Correction to March minutes: Missouri Coder’s Day celebration to be in GL11, not GL111. 

It was announced that the next coding exam would be held May 12, 2007 in QD118.  Proctors will be Joann Perkins & Nicole Hoffman.  Gere will be offering review sessions for the exams on July 28 & October 27.  Review sessions will be held 2 weeks prior to the exam, rather than 1 week prior. The next meeting is Thursday, June 14, in QD118 from 8:30 am-11:00 am.  The speaker will be Dr. Rumi Fazier from Vascular Surgery. 

The Seminar committee announced that the seminar date has been changed to Friday, September 14th. Gere reported that Nancy Hayes still hasn’t received any information from Nationals on the workshops. Gere announced that the July bootcamp, which runs July 26-27 is full with 50 people signed up to attend.  Gere will be sending out a reminder email so if anyone needs to cancel they can. 

The Missouri Coders’ Day celebration will be in GL11 on June 21.  A slide show will be presented, so if any members have photos from past meetings/seminars they would like to include, contact a member of the Coders’ Day committee. 

Gere gave an update on the AAPC National meeting:        12 members of the Show-Me Chapter attended.         There will be regional conferences held beginning in June; there is more information on the national AAPC website.           

 It was noted that we are a non-profit organization and that we should have only $500 in our treasury @ year end.  Additional monies can be used to purchase AAPC “Bucks” for members’ education.  The “Bucks” no longer have an expiration date. Gere announced that there will be an officers’ meeting in the near future come up with some ideas for changes involving budgets, committees, etc.  Information will be brought to the members after the meeting. Gere suggested that we start having 2 monthly meetings: one at our normal time and one in the evening so that members that cannot get away from the office to attend can still come & earn CEUs.  Gere purchased a set of DVDs at nationals that can be used for the evening meetings.         Donna Epperly motioned that Gere be reimbursed the cost of the DVDs; Michele Sisson-White seconded.  The motion passed. Door prizes were awarded to Darla Dorward, Bridget Crabtree, Rhonda Lee, & Rita Lunsford.

Show-Me Chapter Meeting Minutes April 12, 2007  Gere Harmon brought the meeting to order and introduced the speaker, Marcia Kennedy from Missouri Medicare.   Coding scenarios were provided by Bev Shelly & reviewed by Brenda Hilgedick. Donna Epperly read the minutes & treasurer’s report from the March meeting; both were approved. It was announced that the next coding exam would be held May 12, 2007 in QD118.  Proctors will be Joann Perkins & Nicole Hoffman.  As no one has volunteered to conduct review sessions for the exams, Gere Harmon will be conducting them.  She will provide more information at a future time. The next meeting is Thursday, May 10, in QD118 from 8:30 am-11:00 am.  The speaker will be Dr. Tom Aleto from the Department of Orthopaedics. The Seminar committee gave an update on the September Seminar, which will be held Thursday September 13.  Brenda Hilgedick moved for the Seminar Committee to have a buget of $3500 with permission to go over budget if they need to hire a paid speaker.  Vicky Roberts seconded; the motion passed.  Nancy Hayes announced that she had requested information on three different workshops from National office & would let us know what she received.  Gere announced that the July bootcamp, which runs July 26-27 is full with 50 people signed up to attend. The Missouri Coders’ Day celebration will be in GL111 on June 21.  A slide show will be presented, so if any members have photos from past meetings/seminars they would like to include, contact a member of the Coders’ Day committee. Gere announced that she has handouts for all the presentations that will be given at the National meeting in Seattle.  If you are unable to attend but find one of the sessions interesting, please email her & she will forward you the handouts. If you are interested in the CEU manager, contact Gere.  Door prizes were awarded to Cathy Foust, Tina Cox, Peggy Canoy, Carrie Lacey, & Brenda Hilgedick. Gere adjourned the meeting.  Respectfully submitted by Donna Epperly, CPC-A AAPC Show-Me Chapter Secretary/Treasurer.

Show-Me Chapter Meeting Minutes March 8, 2007  

Gere Harmon brought the meeting to order.   

Leslie Stewart introduced speaker Victoria Gilpin, APRN from Vascular Surgery to speak about Collaborative Coding Issues & Solutions. 

Coding scenarios were provided & reviewed by Bev Shelly. 

Donna Epperly read the minutes & treasurer’s report from the February meeting; both were approved. 

It was announced that the next coding exam would be held March 10, 2007 in QD118.   The next meeting is Thursday, April 12, in QD118 from 8:30 am-11:00 am.  The speaker will be Marcia Kennedy from Missouri Medicare. 

The first boot camp with Greg Milliger was held February 22 & 23; approximately 30 people attended.  The next boot camp is July 26 & 27 @ Quarterdeck.  Attendees should be sure to bring their CPT, ICD-9, and HCPCS books. 

Gere will be attending the national meeting in Seattle in April and will bring back information from the various meetings.   Gere asked again for volunteers to conduct review sessions for exams. The Speaker committee announced that we have speakers booked thru June; they asked members for help in filling the rest of the year’s meetings.  Nancy Hayes will be sending the top 4 requested workshops out to members for them to vote on. Gere announced that the seminar committee needs to meet, pick a chairman, & start looking for a seminar location.  The Coders’ Day committee also needs to meet. Vicky Roberts opened discussion to make a monetary donation to member Ollie Nowlin & her family.  Vicky moved that the chapter donate $500 to the family; Michele Sisson-White seconded.  Motion passed.

Show-Me Chapter Meeting Minutes February 8, 2007 

Meeting brought to order by Gere Harmon. 

Leslie Stewart introduced Todd Storm, Manager of Business & Fiscal Operations for the Department of Surgery, to discuss how coders can learn more about the financial process, and what they can do to improve it. 

Coding scenarios were provided and reviewed by Michele Sisson-White. 

Donna read the minutes & treasurer’s report from the January meeting; they were approved. 

Gere discussed more changes that were being made by the National office for local chapters, including:Members will be assigned to a local chapter upon passing CPC exam.Beginning with 2008, Show-Me chapter will no longer charge local dues.Members can attend any AAPC meeting & receive CEUs for attending.CEUs will be submitted to Nationals every two years, rather than every year; however, dues still need to be paid annually.Members who renew in odd months will pay dues & submit CEUs for 2007.Members who renew in even months will pay dues only for 2007.More information can be found in the January Coding Edge.National office has revamped its website—members can log in with their AAPC Member ID.National is limiting local chapters to 1 seminar per year, and is encouraging the offering of workshops set up through the National office. 

Gere mentioned an interesting article in Advance magazine, which is published by AHIMA, that was written by the President of AAPC. 

Gere discussed the possibility of implementing a points system for scholarships, noting that there was an article about it in the Coding Edge. 

Gere announced that Linda Martien will no longer be conducting the review sessions for the AAPC exams.  The next exam is Saturday, March 10th in QD 118.  Joann Perkins & Donna Epperly will be proctors. 

Gere announced that a new domain has been purchased for the Show-Me Chapter’s web site.  It is www.showmeAAPC.com.  Gere will have more information when the site is up and running.

Show-Me Chapter Meeting Minutes January 11, 2007 

Meeting brought to order by Gere Harmon. 

Gere introduced Bev Shelly from University Physicians Audit & Reimbursement to discuss 2007 CPT changes. 

Coding scenarios were provided and reviewed by Bev. 

Gere called a 10-minute break. 

Donna read the minutes & treasurer’s report from the November meeting; they were approved. 

Gere announced that the refreshments that morning were provided by the Department of Dermatology. During the Christmas Party, donations were collected for Candy Sulltrop; $122 was collected.  Candy sent the chapter a Thank-You card expressing her appreciation. Gere announced that the National Office will be sending someone to attend at least one of the local chapter meetings, possibly in February. Gere asked for more volunteers for the refreshment & membership committees. Scholarship committee reported that Greg Milliger has offered to come for two two-day training sessions, one in February & one in July or August.  The cost will be $9,000 for all expenses; however, the members attending must provide their own books.  There is a maximum attendance of 50 people per session.  The workshop would be worth 12 CEUs.  The sessions are February 22 & 23 and July 26 & 27. - Joann Perkins moved to have the two workshops; Bev Shelley seconded.  Motion passed. Gere will send out email to members; the first 50 responding for each session will be registered. 

Gere announced changes to the officer structure, per the National office.  Secretary & Treasurer has been combined and two new offices, Education Officer & Membership Officer, have been added.  Donna Epperly is the Secretary/Treasurer, Nancy Hayes is the Education Officer, & Pam Matheny is the Membership Officer.National office was to have sent out letters in December assigning members to local chapters.  Gere announced that if you were assigned to a different chapter than the Show-Me Chapter, to email Nationals and ask them to change you. 

Gere announced that the Web Site committee would like to make some changes to the web site, but to do so the chapter may have to pay for a domain name.  Brenda Hilgedick moved to budget $10-50 per year for a web site domain; Tina Cox seconded.  The motion passed. 

The February meeting will be held in M302 in the School of Medicine, on February 8 from 8:30 to 11:00 am.  Todd Storm will be the speaker. Gere announced that there were no rooms available in the mornings for the October & November meetings.  It was decided to have them in the afternoon from 12pm-3pm in Quarterdeck. Gere announced that the National office wants each local chapter to have an awards banquet.  Vicky Roberts moved that the awards banquet be combined with our Christmas party in December; Becky Boone seconded.  Motion passed. Gere awarded door prizes.  Winners were Cathy Foust, Greg Cook, Kim Sapp, & Genia Boggs. Gere adjourned meeting.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes November 9, 2006

 

Meeting brought to order by Gere Harmon.

 

Carol read the minutes from the October meeting and they were approved.

 

Michele read the treasurers report and it was approved.

Beginning balance of $14,887.92, $85.13 in expenses, $550 in revenue with an ending balance of $15,352.79.

 

Tina Cox introduced the speaker Dr. Muzzafar.

Deidre introduced the new officers for 2007 which are Carol Kruger, President Elect; Nancy Hayes, Secretary and Donna Epperly, Treasurer.

 

Deidre reminded members to sign up for committees for 2007.

 

Peggy Canoy from the Scholarship Committee said to call or e-mail suggestions/ideas for 2007 to her.  The committee will be meeting before the December meeting.

 

Deidre announced meeting places/times for 2007.  Motion made by Vicky Roberts for no meeting in July or September.  Motion seconded by Michele Sisson White.  Motion passed.  It was decided to try to find bigger room for 2008.

 

Gere Harmon proposed to use the scholarship money for the chapter to sponsor a two day Boot Camp covering CPC, CPC-H and CPC-P possibly in February. The Scholarship Committee is supposed to come up with some guidelines by the December meeting.

October 12, 2006

 

Deidre Stone opened the meeting and introduced the speakers: Nancy Cole and Sue Vest from the MO Cancer Registry.

 

10 minute break.

 

Coding scenarios were regarding neoplasms.

 

Deidre read minutes from last month and they were approved.

 

Michele read treasurer report with details of Seminar revenue.

Report was approved.

 

Restated Next CPC exam review and test date for November.

 

Holiday Party budget increase to $1000 was approved.

Will do RSVP to Holiday Party to get accurate count of thos attending.

Limited discussion since no committee members present.

Ornament exchange with swapping approved.

Non-educational door prizes number to be determined b y committee based on budget liits after food, etc. purchased.

Gere requested questions and answers for Jeopardy Game

 

Voting on new officers will be online.  Deidre, Gere and Joyce Shelby will take care of vote counts.

Voting to begin 10/23/06 ending 10/31/06 at noon.

Deidre will announce winners 11/1/06.

 

Payment of proctors –

Now $60 base rate with $5.00 per person taking test.  To date $850 paid out with $490 reimbursed from National. Next year Chapter will only pay the $60.00 base rate and then re-evaluate next year.

ShowMe Chapter Minutes August 10, 2006

Meeting was brought to order by Deidre.

Leslie Stewart from the speaker committee introduced the speaker. Dr. Glen Gardner from Vascular Surgery presented the topic “Understanding Vascular Coding” and gave some coding scenarios at the end.

Scholarship recipient Chuck Victor presented “Evolution and Direction of E&M and Medical Decision Making” plus coding scenarios.

Meeting adjourned by Deidre for a 10 minute break.

 

Carol read the minutes from the June 8, 2006 meeting and they were approved. Due to Michele’s absence the treasures report was not available. Diedre gave the ending balance as of July 31, 2006 as $10,332.62.

 

Announcements:

Next Exam will be Saturday, August 12, 2006 in room QD237 from 7:30 to 2:00.

 

Committee Updates:

There are 58 people signed up for the September Seminar. Carol was asked to send out another reminder because members reported that they had not received the reminder that was sent out earlier in the week. Anyone not having e-mail was asked to see Carol to give mailing information. Most of the door prizes have been donated. A motion was made to give the 6 speakers a Visa gift card worth $50 and passed. The $5.00 fee per card was approved also. Carol Kruger will purchase the cards.

 

 

 

Old Business:

Deidre Stone announced that 75 to 100 people attended the State Coder’s Day celebration and that we would be doing something next year also. OB/GYN had a breakfast for their coders.

 

 

New Business:

Deidre said she had received a letter from the national office regarding podcasts. They are downloadable audio files available through the internet which national would provide us to share with members. She said she would share the letter with members and asked the members to send ideas of what they would like.

 

Deidre announced that we needed nominations for 2007 officers and we’d like to have them ready for the October 12th meeting. Members should e-mail Deidre or Carol with nominations and we will contact the person to see if they are willing to run. Members can contact the person their nominating if they like. The candidates will be announced at the November 9th meeting. Tim Parkinson suggested an on-line survey for voting purposes because of problems with the ballots last year and it was agreed on.

Gere Harmon gave an update regarding the September Seminar. Roger Weiss from Medicaid will be the first speaker and Steven Kane, M.D. from the Orthopaedic Department will be the other morning speaker. One speaker is still needed for the afternoon plus Jeopardy game/coding scenarios.  Kim Woods was going to check with her department for speakers.

Deidre Stone asked for volunteers for the committee since there was only one member who had signed up originally.  The following members volunteered: Deidre Stone, Carol Kruger, Donna Epperly and Pam Matheny.

 

Old business discussed:

Reception for State Coder’s Day on June 21, 2006 in the Acuff Gallery from 11:00 to 1:30. Deidre Stone asked Carol Kruger to send out a reminder to the volunteers. Gere Harmon announced that the brochure had been finalized and members indicated that they had already seen them posted in the elevators. Deidre Stone asked Carol Kruger to send out a copy of the brochure to all members via e-mail.

 

No new business was discussed.

 

Treasures report was given by Michele Sisson White.  Ending balance $8678.14. Minutes from the May 11, 2006 meeting were read by Carol Kruger and approved.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes May 11, 2006

 

Meeting brought to order by Gere Harmon.

Gere Harmon took pictures for the poster for State Coder’s Day.

Peggy Canoy introduced the panel of speakers who attended the National Conference.

Joann Perkin’s presentation was from the key note address by Marcella Buckman “50 ways to make your career take off”.

Candy Sulltrop presented “The Spirit of Fingers-Hand Procedures” given by Douglas Hutchinson, M.D.  You need to visualize procedures to know what you’re coding.

Staci Keithly presented “Plastic/Skin Grafting” given by Betty Johnson.

Carol Lami presented “Lightening bolt chart auditing for physician services”.

Penny Scott presented “Modifiers-It’s all about the money” given by Laureen Jandroop.

Renee Kientz presented “Modifiers-Outpatient Hospital facility coding” given by Deborah Grider.

Coding scenarios were provided by the panel of speakers. Gere Harmon adjourned the meeting for a  10 minute break.

Minutes from April 13th meeting were read by Carol Kruger and were approved. Treasurer’s Report given by Michele Sisson White.  Ending balance was $9334.85.

Gere Harmon announced that the next exam was to be May 13th from 7:30 to 2:00 in QD237 with proctors Becky Boone and Candy Sulltrop. Gere Harmon announced that Don Self had cancelled the September Seminar due to a scheduling conflict.  Discussion followed whether or not to change it to October and if so would it be about 2006 or 2007 changes.   It was decided to go ahead with the Seminar in September and find other speakers.  Trenda Lee said she would contact Roger Weiss at Medicaid about speaking.

Old business discussed was State Coder’s Day June 21st.  It was decided to hold the reception from 11:30 to 1:30 in the Mezzanine and cake, punch and nuts would be served.  A budget of $400 which was left over from the booth at the National Conference was approved.  Members voted on which poster to use.

New business discussed was whether not to let students from the Career Center come free to the meetings.  We would serve as mentors to them.  Voted on and passed.

Gere Harmon announced that they need instructors for classes starting in September which would be 2 nights per week for 10 weeks.  Gere also announced she purchased for the chapter a tape of all the sessions at the National Conference for anyone interested in watching them.  She volunteered to be the librarian for the chapter.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes April 13, 2006

 

Deidre Stone brought the meeting to order.

Speakers Marilee Bomar, MSN, Rebecca Rastkar, APRN and Sharon Cornelison, FNP from the Department of Family and Community Medicine talked about chronic care.  It’s not just older patients in their 60’s but they are seeing more patients in their 40’s.  Rebecca started a pilot project in 1999 for these patients and the benefits included reduced visits to the ER and hospitalizations.  Each team has a nurse partner with emphasis on diabetes, congestive heart failure and coronary heart disease.  They charge for these visits and they serve over 900 patients. 

 

Coding scenarios were presented.

Treasurer’s Report given by Michele Sisson White.  Ending balance was $9133.30.

 

Deidre Stone announced State Coders Day will be June 21st.  Having a party was discussed.  It was mentioned having the Missourian come to our meeting and do a write up and possibly having a table in the hospital lobby with an easel and a picture of all of us coders.  Gere Harmon is bringing her camera to take a picture at the May meeting.  Carol needs to send out a reminder about the picture.  Emily Fish suggested putting our brochures out on the table to encourage other coders to join.

 

Next exam review will be May 6th in QD118 from 8:00 to 4:00.

Next exam will be May 13th in QD224 from 7:30 to 2:00.

Proctors will be Becky Boone and Candy Sulltrop.

 

Speaker committee updated that speakers are covered for the rest of the year but we still need a speaker for January.  Please e-mail Cindy Greene with any speaker ideas.

 

Deidre Stone passed out the handout for the Don Self Seminar.  It was suggested to get these mailed out now and the group needs to decide who they will be mailed to.  The seminar will only take 100 attendees. The plan is to get these finalized and mailed by the end of May.  Any questions need to be directed to Becky Boone.

 

Michele Sisson White talked about the National Conference.  It was the first one she had attended had fun and learned quite a bit. The Booth Committee spent $71.40 on supplies for the Chapter’s table.  We were the only chapter there with a brochure and we took 3rd place for attendance with 41 attendees.  Kansas City took 1st place with 55 attendees and Indiana took 2nd place with 42 attendees.

 

Gere Harmon gave an update on the AAPC National Meeting.  National Chapters met last Sunday (April 9th) and they discussed CEUs and proctoring test guidelines.  She felt our chapter was doing well and that we were the only chapter that paid their proctors.  Other chapters reward points to officers and the points would go towards scholarships.  “Medical Coding Professional” is a better title rather than “I’m just a Coder”.  The last thing they talked about was old officers on an advisory board to help direct the new officers.  New officers could ask questions and it would make transition of the officers easier.

 

No new business was discussed.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes March 9, 2006
Deidre Stone brought the meeting to order.

Nicole Hoffman, scholarship recipient, purchased an audio conference CD on Medicare Appeals and gave a talk with handout regarding same.
Minutes from February 9, 2006 meeting were read and approved.
No Treasurer’s report since Michele Sisson White was not in attendance at that time.
It was announced that the next CPC exam will be March 11, 2006.  There are 7-8 people signed up.
There were no Committee updates.
T-shirts for Logos were brought in and given to Tina Cox who will get them to the embroiderer.
Surveys from February’s meeting were made available at the March meeting.  Deidre asked that anyone who had not filled one out so far do so now and get them back to Michele Sisson White.
Status of September Seminar reviewed.  It will be held at Lenoir.  Other details are still to be worked out/confirmed.
It was announced that we still need speakers for October and November meetings.
There was a ten minute break prior to Dr. Selva’s presentation.
Dr. Selva gave his talk “Coding Challenges facing today’s Pediatrician”.  It was very good with lots of information and interaction.
There was a 10 minute break after Dr. Selva’s presentation.
Michele Sisson White had some updates regarding the Booth at the National Conference.  Has have several items lined up for the table.  She also had four brochures with potential Show Me Chapter logo suggestions.  Attendees voted on their choice.

State with AAPC banner will be the Chapter logo for the brochure displayed on the table at the National Conference in April.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes February 9, 2006


Deidre Stone brought the meeting to order.

Speakers Melba Hall and Scottie Rawlings from the Department of Family and Community Medicine talked about Diabetes.
Karen Einspahr used her scholarship to purchase 4 books.  She brought Coding With Modifiers and presented a coding scenario.
Marylynn Ramey used her scholarship to attend the Cross Country Seminars on December 15th ICD-9 Coding and December 16th CPT Coding.  She could not attend the meeting and asked Peggy Canoy to present what she learned and provided coding scenarios.
Nicole Hoffman was not present to talk about her scholarship which she used to purchase some books.
Deidre Stone dismissed everyone for a 10 minute break.
Coding scenarios were provided by Gere Harmon.
Carol Kruger read the minutes from the January 12th meeting.  It was noted that the date for the December meeting needed to be changed to the 12th.
Michele Sisson White gave the treasurers report.
Starting balance was $14,370.68, expenses totaled $8,674.04,  deposits totaled $3,670.00 with pending deposits of $300.00, with an ending balance of $9,696.64.
Deidre Stone announced the next review was March 4th from 8:00 to 4:00 in room QD118 and the next exam was March 11th from 7:30 to 2:00 in room QD224.  Proctors are Becky Boone and Staci Keithly.
Michele Sisson White reported that a table had been reserved at the National Conference and the bunting for the table was included.  There are 4 committee members who are manning the booth.
Gere Harmon announced that we needed speakers for upcoming meetings and to e-mail the speaker committee members with ideas.
Old business discussed included the September Seminar and shirts for the National Conference.  Deidre Stone gave two dates available for the Seminar, September 12th or  September 14th.  Gere Harmon made a motion to have it on September 14th and Tim Parkinson seconded the motion.  Motion was voted on and passed. 
Peggy Canoy brought in some logos and it was decided to go with the Black and Gold AAPC Show Me Chapter logo. The cost for the logo is $6.00 and was estimated to take 10 minutes per shirt.  Peggy was to get 3 estimates and turn around times.  It was decided that everyone wanting shirts for the National Conference should bring their shirts to the March meeting.
New business discussed was the survey passed out.  Carol Kruger will e-mail the survey to the group and the surveys should be e-mailed or faxed back to Michele Sisson White.
It was announced the next meeting was on March 9th from 12:00 to 2:30 in room QD228.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes January 12, 2006


Deidre Stone brought the meeting to order.
Darlene Ornburn of the Office of Corporate Compliance presented the top 10 issues identified through audits for Compliance and the OIG.
Amanda Gregory used her scholarship to purchase 4 books including Coding with Modifiers which she brought to show.
Candy Ross used her scholarship to go to The Ingenix Conference in Las Vegas and received the ICD-9 book for Advanced GYN Coding.
Candy Sulltrop used her scholarship to attend The Coding Game Seminar/Compliance Facts and Appeals and presented some coding scenarios.
Nancy Walsh used her scholarship to purchase 4 books including Practical E&M Coding and Easy Coder which she brought to show.
Nicole Hoffman used her scholarship to purchase some books which had not come in yet, so she will give her presentation in February.
Michele Sisson White gave the treasurers report.
There were no minutes from the December 12st meeting.
Deidre Stone announced the next exam will be on March 11th and the review for the exam will be on March 4th both at the Quarterdeck building.
Deidre Stone announced that the Seminar Committee only had one person on it and made a suggestion that Don Self plan the seminar for September.  The funds would be split 50/50 and the consulting firm would do everything but mail out the brochures and work the registration desk.  He normally charges $195 for members and $235 for non-members.  Cindy Greene made a motion that Don Self plan the seminar.  Nancy Walsh seconded the motion.  Motion was voted on and passed.  Deidre Stone gave his website donself.com.
Cindy Greene of the Speaker Committee raised the issue of the increasing the amount given for the speakers from $25 to $30 because the Visa Bank Card she had purchased at Boone County Bank had cost an extra $4.95.  It was suggested that gift cards be purchased in advance from various businesses (restaurants, etc.) so the speaker(s) could choose which one(s) they wanted.  Discussion of the subject ensued.  Gere Harmon made a motion to keep the amount at $25 and purchase a variety of gift cards.  Cindy Greene seconded the motion.  Motion was voted on and passed. 
The Scholarship Committee drew names for the 15 scholarships to attend the National Conference in St. Louis in April. 
The first 7 names drawn were Staci Keithley, Carol Lami, Nancy Walsh, Renee Kientz, Joann Perkins, Penny Scott and Candy Sulltrop and they are required to have a panel presentation about the conference at the May meeting.
The second 8 names drawn were Chuck Victor, Jina Johnson, Cathy Foust, Carol McKenzie, Marti Felten, Gwen McHenry, Stephanie Crutcher and Becky Boone and they are required to have a panel presentation about the conference at the June Meeting.
Tina Cox announced that the registration deadline is February 15th.
Payment and reimbursement for registration will be handled by Peggy Canoy.
New business discussed was the booth at the national conference.  Sherri Williams wanted to know what kind of shirts we wanted (t-shirts or polos) and that they would probably cost $15 each.  The logo to be put on the shirts was discussed as well as how much money to spend and what kinds of things to give away.  It was decided to table the discussion until the February meeting until more information could be gathered.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes November 10, 2005
Becky Boone brought the meeting to order.
Dr.  Reza Farid of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation presented treatments for spasticity, dystonia, and hypertonia using Botox, Phenol and Baclofen.
Donna Rouse-Luebbert who used her scholarship winnings to purchase a gastric bypass tape, gave a short speech on what she learned about the criteria for the surgery & provided coding scenarios.
Lynn Barron used her scholarship to attend a seminar in St. Louis on Medicare Part B and shared the handouts she received with everyone.
Gere Harmon used her scholarship to get recertified in compliance by purchasing an exam review book on fraud & abuse.  She shared a questionnaire included in the book with the group.
Peggy Canoy, of the Scholarship Committee presented the group with a proposal to change the scholarships for next year.  In order to encourage everyone to attend the national seminar in St. Louis, the committee asked for ,375 to pay for 15 early-bird registrations to paid Show-Me Chapter members.   There was also a suggestion for 30 scholarships to attend.  Discussion of the subject ensued.  Nancy Hayes made a motion to have 15 scholarships of each.  Vicki Jones seconded.  Motion was voted on and passed.  Winners of these scholarships will be drawn in January.
Peggy then announced that 4 people had volunteered to man the booth at the seminar and also asked for to purchase items to give away at the booth.  There was discussion at length on what type of items to offer.  Sherri Williams offered the services of her daughter who does embroidery on T-shirts.  The issue of how much money to allow for the booth and what to offer was tabled for the time being.
Becky announced that Mona Prater with Missouri Medicare Managed Care Organization needs individuals to help with auditing for Missouri Medicaid.  Those interested are to contact Becky.
Also announced was the CPC exam on November 12.
Becky encouraged the members to sign up for committees and proctoring exams for next year.

Nancy Hayes, of the Nominations Committee, asked the group to decide whether we should use ballots that were mailed to her but didn’t have a return name or address.  Toby Class made a motion to use those ballots in the election.  Tina Cox seconded.  Motion was approved.  Election winners were not announced pending the receipt of ballots from members who work at the VA Hospital. 
Lisa Glass informed the members of a problem getting a room for our February, March and April meetings.  Several options were discussed.  Gere Harmon had talked with Jennifer Reiss and informed the group that we could get the Quarterdeck Building if we moved our meetings to noon in February & March.  Michelle Sisson-White made the motion to change our time in those months from 8:30 to noon.  Gere Harmon seconded.  Motion passed.  The problem of a room for April’s meeting was tabled.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes October 13, 2005
Becky Boone brought the meeting to order.
Dr. Kevin Dellsperger presented the topic of Cardiology with procedures  and workups used for various diagnoses, including Cor Pulmonale, Syncope, Heart Failure, Ischemia, etc.
Susan Claeys gave a short speech and provided and a questionnaire showing the group what she learned using her scholarship to attend a seminar held in Kansas City about Surgical Chart Auditing on August 12 and our seminar in September.
The minutes & treasurer’s reports were read by Lisa Glass & Toby Class and approved. 
Nancy Hayes, of the Nominations Committee, provided the group with a nomination form to use for the elections of new chapter officers to be held during November’s meeting.  These forms were to be returned to her by November 1.
Becky announced the CPC exam review on November 5 and the exam on November 12, both to be held at the Quarterdeck Building.
Becky also announced that Linda Martien has been appointed by the National Chapter as an
“Other Officer” so she can file paperwork for exam reviews.

) has offered our chapter a bulk rate for books, newsletters and other items for future use.
Susan Todd had a question about the amount allowed to spend on the Christmas Party.  Previous minutes are to be checked regarding this matter & emailed to Susan.
Toby Class let the group know that Access Interpreter Service has increased their rates by $1 per hour plus 35 cents per mile.
Geri Harmon made it known that our chapter has been offered the chance to have a booth at the national seminar being held in April in St. Louis.  This booth would have information on our chapter regarding what we have done in the past year, membership requirements, etc and would only be for one day.  We would need volunteers for this endeavor.
Tina Cox thanked the Seminar Committee for the fantastic job they did in September.

Linda Martien has written a letter to Governor Blunt about enacting a State Coder’s Day.  Becky presented a petition for everyone to sign, which, after getting the necessary signatures, will be sent to our elected officials.

Becky Boone brought the meeting to order.
 
The minutes & treasurer’s report were read by Lisa Glass & approved.  Treasurer’s report was provided by Toby Class who was unable to attend.
Becky announced the exam for Saturday, August 13 and the seminar on September 16.  Seminar Committee member Shelli Martin reminded the group of the need to provide questions for the panel beforehand.
Shelli Martin then asked the chapter for for door prizes at the seminar.  Emily Fish made the motion to provide this money, Tina Cox seconded.  Motion was approved.
Geri Harmon began a discussion about the difficulty of getting & keeping proctors for CPC certification exams.  Mary McDaniel made the motion to pay proctors each plus per test taker, which would start in January 2006.  This motion was seconded by Candy Sulltrop.  Motion was approved.
Linda Martien presented the interesting topic of new coding with ICD-10.

Tammy Endres gave a short speech and provided hand-outs showing the group what she learned by using her scholarship to attend a seminar in St. Louis about Reconstruction Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Sarah Crowder, M.D. presented the subject of Gynecologic Cancers.  She explained how she trains residents to document for better reimbursement, surgical treatment indications vs. chemotherapy treatment, how cancers are staged, and instruments used for radiation treatment.
Gere Harmon presented a OB/Gyn hidden word puzzle and announced that instructors are needed for the Career Center Coding program.

It was announced that we now have speakers for remaining meetings this year.
The minutes & treasurer’s reports were read by Lisa Glass & Toby Class and approved.
Becky announced the CPC review and exam will still be held on May 7 and 14th in the Quarterdeck Building.
Old Business:
According to the National chapter we are still a non-profit organization.
Regarding the topic of visitors, Becky talked with officers of other Missouri Chapters to learn how they handle visitors and CEUs.  Most chapters don’t charge a fee for visitors or offer CEUs.  Discussion on the subject ensued.  Emily Fish made a motion to allow unlimited visits by guests with the stipulation that to receive CEUs they must become a member of the Show-Me Chapter.  This was seconded by Michelle Sisson-White.  Motion voted on and approved.
This decision is to be added to our website along with an application that can be filled out online & submitted.
As for the topic of the extra money in the treasurer’s account:
Becky showed that of the ,000 in the account there is already ,815 allocated for spending this year.  There were many suggestions on what to do with this extra money.   Among the suggestions, the most popular were:
--To get a professional speaker and allowing non-members to attend for a charge.
--Having an audio/video conference.
--Having a larger Christmas party or changing the party using the money to purchase gifts that are coding/CEU oriented.
--Renting a room for meetings or getting a wireless microphone.
Peggy Canoy asked that we send out meeting reminders earlier.
The September seminar speaker has been confirmed.  The panel of experts are similar to last year.  The experts will need questions for the round-table portion of the meeting.

Linda Martien expressed  her appreciation, through Becky, for the flowers we sent to her to congratulate her on being elected to the National Advisory Board.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes March 10, 2005
Becky Boone brought the meeting to order.
Becky brought up the topic of how much to allow for refreshments at monthly meetings.  There was discussion on whether to keep the amount at or raise it to for supplies.  Peggy Canoy made a motion to allow a monthly allotment of , which was seconded by Nancy Hayes.  Motion was voted on and approved.
Discussion was held regarding speakers for May, June and August.  It was later revealed that the speaker for May will be Dr Sara Crowder with a presentation on Gynecologic Cancer, procedures, staging & anatomy.  Speakers are still needed for June, August, October & November and Becky will be getting with those in the speaker committee about this.
The minutes & treasure’s reports were read by Lisa Glass & Toby Class and approved.
Announcements:
The CPC exam to be held March 12 at the Quarterdeck Building was announced.  Procters for the testing were Bev Shelley and Rhonda Brown.
Also announced:  Suggestions are still needed for the September seminar.  Suggestions are to be given to Gere Harmon.
Gere Harmon announced that she had reserved a room at the Quarterdeck for our November meeting.  It will no longer be held at the UP Building classroom.  For future reference, the UP Classroom was not the best place to hold monthly meetings.
Since the Show-Me Chapter currently has a balance of ,000 there was a question as to whether we were still considered a non-profit chapter & what we should do with this money.  Becky is to look into our status & asked for a list of suggestions for what we should do with the money.  There were several ideas mentioned but there were no motions or votes on the subject.
Gere Harmon presented an OB/GYN terminology crossword puzzle.
Gina Harris, NP of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Women’s Health at UMHC presented the topic of high risk pregnancy and normal pregnancy care with a question an answer period.
Becky had a late announcement of Linda Martien being elected to the National Advisory Board.  Discussion followed for a gift.  Emily Fish made a motion to get flowers.  This was seconded by Tina Cox, voted on and passed.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes February 10, 2005
Becky Boone brought the meeting to order.
Becky introduced Dr. Normand R. Caron who gave a presentation on the topic of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery, including the different instruments used & the benefits of VATS vs. open surgery.
Gere Harmon presented coding scenarios to test skills & knowledge.
Peggy Canoy reminded everyone of the drawing for scholarships for seminars.  We had 15 winners and 5 stand-ins for the scholarships.  These winners must submit documentation of what they used their scholarship for to the chair of the committee, present coding scenarios/questions and each scholarship must be used by December 31, 2005. 
The following names were drawn for scholarships:
Amanda Gregory, Darla Doward, Marylynn Ramey, Candy Ross, Barbara Bogan, Marti Weiseman, Nada Gibson, Karen Einspar, Susan Claeys, Carolyn Gibbons, Donna Rouse-Luebbert, Lynn Barron, Nancy Taylor, Shirley Owens, and Gere Harmon.
The following five names were drawn in the event that a winner could not use scholarship money:

The Treasurer’s report was read by Toby Class & approved.
Gere Harmon announced the September Seminar on September 16 from 9-4 at Lenoir.    Shawn Weis from CMC Consulting will be speaking on ICD-10.  Other topics are still needed.  Ideas can be emailed to Gere at
harmong@health.missouri.edu.  Costs for this event have not yet been discussed
CPC exam on March 12th was announced.  It was also announced that the March meeting will be held at the University Physician’s Medical Building in the third floor classroom on March 10th.  A speaker/topic still needs to be chosen for April.
Old Business:
The topic of visitors was brought up for discussion since there has been many questions about this lately.  Many options were debated, including whether we should give CEUs to guests without charging a fee.  It was decided to table the discussion for the March meeting or until we can investigate how other Missouri chapters handle this matter.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes November 11, 2004
Ann Juengerman brought the meeting to order.
Susie Early MD from Columbia private practice gave a very informative talk on obstructive sleep apnea. Discussing risk factors, diagnostic and treatment options.

 

Ann presented coding scenarios to test our skills and knowledge.
August minutes and treasurer report read and approved.
            With treasure report it was noted that we had 10 plus new members signed up in 2004.
            2005 membership fees will be due January 1, 2005.
November CPC exam date announced. (25 people are signed up to take the test).
2005 exam dates for CPC exam were announced. Will be soliciting proctors for there four exams before December 31
Peggy Canoy discussed changes in the scholarships for 2005.
  • Increasing the number from 10 to 15.
  • The scholarships are good for up to .
  • Uses for the scholarships were expanded to include books, subscriptions or other items on the AAPC approved list to receive CEU’s.
  • At the February 2005 Chapter meeting names of all paid members in good standing will be put in a hat and the 15 winners would be drawn.  These winners would have until December 31, 2005 to use these scholarships.
These changes were all approved unanimously by members.

Secretary will sent out emails with nomination form and web site listed so prospective candidates can review job duties.
Discussion of next years meeting schedules resulted in:
            9 meetings for the year (this includes the December Holiday Party)
            1 seminar in September
            meetings will be held second Thursday of the month from 8:30 to 11 am
            January 2005 and July 2005 will be the month skipped next year
            Scholarships will be awarded in February and May
It was decided that we should have a discussion/suggestions regarding the uses for the scholarships that we give out yearly.  Potential items to include: audio conferences, publication subscriptions to name just a few.
Next years CPC exams would again be offered in February,  May,  August, and November.

Sharon Cornelison, RNC, Family & Community Medicine, spoke regarding obstetrical patients in the Family Practice clinic and her role in this process.
Nancy Nash presented obstetric coding scenarios and a diagnosis quiz to test our knowledge of obstetric billing and coding.

Scholarship winners were reminded that scholarship dollars must be used by December 31, 2004.
Next CPC exam will be August 14, 2004.
Another Coding Boot Camp is being set up by Audit and Reimbursement for this fall.

Gere Harmon presented medical records questionnaire to test our knowledge of medical records information and documentation.

September Seminar lunch choices were for lunch buffet or for a sit down lunch.
Group voted for the buffet.  Committee will decide on food choices for the buffet.  Lunch will have to be prepaid in advance so we will know how many will attend buffet luncheon.
As to the issue of Chapter Members required being National Members also.  It was decided that we would continue as usual and not have this requirement for our Chapter Membership.

Show Me Chapter Meeting Minutes April 8, 2004
Ann Juengerman brought the meeting to order.
Dr. Rick White, Department of Orthopedic Surgery gave a presentation on knee and hip replacement.
Bev Shelly did coding scenarios following talk.
March Meeting minutes read and approved.
March Treasury report read and approved.
Beginning 4/1/04, Boone County National Bank who handles the Show Me chapter checking account will charge /home/free/cgi-bin/util/sitebuilder.25 cents per check because we require two signatures.  Chapter voted to leave this as is and we would pay the additional charge per check.
Next chapter meeting will be May 13, 2004.
There will be a CPC exam held May 8, 2004 with the review held by Linda Martien, May 1, 2004.
Report on food for the September seminar will be given at next month's meeting.
Possibility of a round table discussion by past seminar attendees to be the Topic/Subject for our October meeting was discussed.

Whether local chapter members have to members of National AAPC Chapter was discussed.  Ann Juengermann will research this out further with the National Office and Show Me local chapter will have to make a decision regarding this matter next month.

Ann Juengermann brought the meeting to order.
 
Announced speakers: Linda Martien and Heather Allen who gave a very interesting and informative talk on coding gastrointestinal problems and procedures.
 
February minutes were read and approved.
February treasury report read and approved.
 
Speaker announced for April meeting.
 
Reminder that Chapter will need to review meeting times in October or November in order to set schedule of meetings for 2005 (i.e. noon vs mornings; every vs every other month etc.).
 
AAPC exam is scheduled for May 8, 2004  with the usual review given by Linda Martien the previous Saturday, May 1, 2004.
 
Reminder that nomination committee needs members.
 
Gere Harmon let the group know that our booklet submission has been denied.
 
Seminar Committee is making progress on the Seminar for September.
            Seminar will be Friday, September 17, 2004, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm at Lenoir.
Motivational speaker and panel members still to be confirmed.
Hope to have the Seminar approved for 6 CEUs by the National office.
Members voted to have lunch provided as part of the seminar ( for members, for non-chapter members)
Seminar committee will provide menu choices at next months meeting.
 
Show Me Chapter still trying for Chapter of the year.  We need to find out if seminar and workshop needed towards this goal.  Can we sponsor a workshop or must we provide one?
 
Members decided they would prefer that the secretary receive promotional/advertisement type emails and then distribute them via email rather than give out member list to anyone who asks.

Introduced speaker Dr James Brown, Radiology.  Topic was Pediatric Radiology.  Covered various aspects of pediatric radiology and radiology in general.

February's Show Me Chapter CPC exam canceled since no one signed up.
Committee reports given:
Nomination Committee needs two additional members.
Speaker Committee has speakers for all months in 2004 but one, October is still pending.  Voted and approved to substitute Yearly Seminar for September's monthly meeting.  Speakers for the year are will be posted on the Show Me Chapter web site as national office has approved and assigned CEUs for each.  Web Site is

Our CEU Booklet is ready to be submitted to the National office for approval with application to become a vendor.   Price for the booklet was proposed to be nationally, and for Show Me Chapter Members.  Booklet will be worth 10 CEUs upon completion.
Member suggested that we come up with some ideas for "incentives" for officers, since it hard to get anyone to volunteer or accept nomination.
Scholarships revisited, reminder of January winners and next drawing at the May meeting.
Shelly Martin gave an update on the September seminar.  Committee is discussing topics, speakers, and locations.   Thinking of having a panel of experts to give brief talk then open the floor for questions from the audience or have questions submitted ahead of time in case panel needs to research answers.  So far, panel participant's suggestions are Elizabeth Jordan, Consultant from Price Waterhouse Cooper, various insurance representatives, Medicare or Medicaid representatives, and/or UMHC HIPPA representatives, with a suggested location of Lenoir on either September 16th or 17th depending on speaker availability. Must decide if we want lunch with speaker as an option for an additional cost.  Will need to come up with a budget amount for Chapter approval.   Suggested have Vendors set up at the seminar to advertise their wares.   Dr Kopp was suggested as a motivational speaker, more details to follow.

Ann Juengermann brought meeting to order at 8:00 am.
 
Introduced speaker Mike Lynch, Office of Compliance, topic was HIPAA.  Covered Privacy Issues, Security Issues, and Standardization of code sets.
 
Bev Shelley, CPC, Audit & Reimbursement provided a Test your knowledge of HIPAA quiz for meeting.
 
December meeting minutes read and approved.
 
Treasury report given with a balance of ,127.61 as of January 8, 2004. Ann wishes to provide detailed treasures report in future with details of expenditures and receipts.   Committees are to meet and provide budget for the coming year.
Review of meeting schedule for 2004.  Even months meeting's being over the lunch hour will be brown bag lunch with the refreshment committee providing sodas and cookies.  Odd month's meetings will be in the morning with the refreshment committee providing breakfast foods. A budget of .00 was approved for each meeting.
 
Speaker for February 12, 2004 meeting will be James Brown, MD from Radiology.
Speaker committee will reserve month of September for Seminar -- to be announced.

Scholarship committee:
  10   - scholarships awarded each year.  Five at the January meeting.   Remaining five awarded at the May meeting.

 Will be providing coding scenarios for each meeting or assigning this duty to someone.
 
Teri Phillips volunteered to check into getting door prizes donated by various venders for each meeting.
 
We have proctors lined up for all four exams for 2004.
 
UMC Boot Camp sponsored by Medical Records was mentioned and discussed.
